Wales stuttered to victory and it was an error-strewn performance. Wales did not lead until the 75th minute when fly half Nicky Robinson slotted over a drop goal.
Fiji led 10-0 midway through the second half before Wales landed a 58th minute penalty. The final quarter saw Wales pile on the pressure but they struggled to break down the Fijian defence. Referee Rob Dickson sent Fijian Isoa Domolailai to the sin bin before Owen scored from the base of the scrum to take Wales to 8-10. Robinson's drop goal saved Welsh blushes with five minutes of play left.
Speaking after the game Owen admitted that Wales had 'got out of jail.' He commented
"We got out of jail a bit there. I have to be honest and say that. Even when we were losing, we were always confident we could come through and win the game. But the problem was time was going against us and it was a huge relief when Nicky came through in the end with that drop goal. We actually played some good stuff out there at times, but just didn't finish it off. It took a good old-fashioned pushover try for us to score, which was nice for the front five. But we had some good moves in general without being clinical enough to take the opportunities which came our way. In the end we won the game, which is what mattered most. But there is clearly an awful lot of work for us to do in training in the next few days."
