League Champions First Up for The Dragons

Newport Gwent Dragons begin their home Magners League campaign with a match against current Champions Ulster.

Newport Gwent Dragons begin their home Magners League campaign with a match against current Champions Ulster. The encounters between the two teams last season were close matches with Ulster narrowly winning both. However, before the Men of Gwent take on the reigning champions they face an away match against Glasgow. The Dragons started their League campaign last year with an away game to Glasgow and got their season off to the perfect start with a win at Hughenden, Paul Turner’s Dragons will be hoping for the same result this time around.

Speaking on the Magners League fixtures Head Coach Paul Turner said, “The Magners League this season is going to be another rung up the ladder from last season. Squads are going to be stronger but we aim to hit the ground running as we did last season. Glasgow away is a tough game as they have changed, regrouped and like us added a lot of new blood to their squad. The Ulster game gives us the chance to put the memories of last season’s defeat to the Irish province right and again we felt we could and should have won that match especially after leading 16-0 but we went soft. It is an interesting opening to our Magners League campaign and one we see as a way to kick on for the rest of the season.”

There is then no let up for The Dragon as following their weekend match against Ulster, they then take on the Scarlets at Rodney Parade in a mid week game. The Dragons have to play a mid week match due to their involvement in the Powergen Cup. However, following their quick succession of games The Dragons will then have a rest, as their free week is the following weekend.
