DRAGONS SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION

The Dragons recently invited a group of youngster on a regional motivational day at Rodney Parade.

The Dragons recently invited a group of youngster on a regional motivational day at Rodney Parade. The youngsters not knowing what to expect were unusually quiet and listened intently like never before. The experience consisted of a stadium tour, meet & greet the Dragons, the trophy room viewing and the unique changing room experience. The day concluded with a question and answer session and presentation of loads of goodies conducted by community manager Mike Sage and Dragons and Wales star Luke Charteris.

The Dragons are delighted to assist community groups in providing their youngsters with a real positive experience, which hopefully will go some small way to motivating and engaging them into the community. Below is a little background information on the group that attended.

Caerphilly Fast Forward is a pupil referral unit, which provides a different learning environment to the mainstream curriculum classroom and therefore offers a more flexible and nurtured approach to learning. Those that attend the unit are given a diverse range of learning experiences that will enable them to succeed in later employment opportunities.

The majority of the young people who attend the unit have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream schools and this is largely due to non-attendance and disruptive behaviour.

Many of the young people that attend Fast Forward experience low motivation, confidence and self-esteem. We have a proven track record of enhancing all of the soft skills and clients show a marked improvement to such an extent that they feel empowered to take control of their own futures.

Through partnership working with local partners like the Sports Development team, we are able to give the young people a diverse range of experiences. Helen Satherley, Programme Development Officer at Fast Forward said “some of our young people have struggled academically but give them a ball and they are able to demonstrate real skills and determination, the young people thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the Newport Gwent Dragons - they were in complete awe of the stadium, facilities & players. Staff would also like to thank the staff & players for their time and effort with the groups”.

The picture really highlights the impact this experience made on the youngsters that attended. A great day was had by all and subsequently a partnership has been forged to ensure more youngsters have the same opportunity.

Since the first visit the group with some new faces have attended Rodney Parade, this time being put through their paces by community manger Mike Sage and meeting star player Ben Castle.
