It’s all to play for in the WRU Age Grade Championships tomorrow night (Wednesday) as three of the regions aiming to move one step closer to the Under 16 and Under 18 finals.
In the older age group, the Blues can make it five wins from five matches this season if they secure a second victory of the regular season over the Dragons, at Cardiff Arms Park.
Five tries, plus eight points from the boot of Josef Griffin back on November 4th was enough to earn the Blues a fourth successive victory in the competition (33-14) and to keep them on the coat-tails of the table-topping Scarlets.
The Scarlets have a five-point advantage ahead of tomorrow’s game although they have played two games more and still have a difficult game at home to the Dragons to come.
For the Blues, it has been an outstanding campaign to date and a bonus point success would all but make sure of their place in the final later in the season.
Although they could be caught, mathematically, two of their remaining three games will be at home with the only away trip scheduled for December 5th against Gogledd Cymru in Colwyn Bay.
At under 16 level, the Ospreys’ victory over Gogledd Cymru on Sunday has put them back in to contention for a final place. They entertain the Dragons at Llandarcy tonight knowing that a victory could take them into second place with the Blues South match at the Scarlets having already been cancelled due to the inclement weather.
The Ospreys were 15-12 winners at Tredegar earlier in the season, thanks to four Ben Thomas penalties, and will fancy their chances of completing the double tomorrow night.
In contrast, the Dragons, who did win their opening away fixture at Blues North, need a rather rapid transformation in fortunes if they are to make the final.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mathew O`Brien who broke his leg last Thursday from everybody in the Dragons at both age-grade and senior level..
