Newport Gwent Dragons back row hero Dan Lydiate remains in contention to play against Fiji for Wales this Friday night at the Millennium Stadium after an ankle injury ruled him out of the starting line-up against the Springboks. Having impressed in the opening defeat in the Invesco Perpetual Series to Australia, Dan had been named to face the world champions, only to be forced to withdraw on match-day.
“Dan is still in with a chance this week, his rehab is progressing well and no decision has yet been made on him, we will know more over the next 24 hours,” said Wales physiotherapist Mark Davies.
The Men of Gwent’s rising star Toby Faletau may win his first international cap, whilst Dragons wings Will Harries and Aled Brew could also be in line for another Wales opportunity, particularly now that Shane Williams has been ruled out of action – for a minimum of 10 weeks – after suffering a dislocation to his left shoulder just before half-time of Saturday’s 29-25 defeat to South Africa.
The Ospreys wing suffered the injury after falling awkwardly in a tackle which caused his shoulder to dislocate before returning immediately back into place.
“A scan has revealed that Shane did, as was thought, dislocate his shoulder, before it immediately moved back into place,” added Davies.
“He will now undergo exploratory surgery in the next 48 hours to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the dislocation, but we know he will be out of action now for a minimum of 10 weeks.”
The Wales team to play Fiji will be announced at 1pm this afternoon.
