Researchers at universities in the US, Australia, and Wales have been trying to understand in what ways sports fans are all same, while also being like no other.
In addition, they want to understand how different levels of commitment influence support for a team. So far, they have confirmed some common sense beliefs, such as highly committed fans tend to spend more time going to home/away games, but have also found some counter-intuitive results.
There is now evidence to suggest that belonging to social groups like supporting a sports team can influence our impressions and evaluations of ourselves and others, through simply thinking about yourself as a sports fan of a specific team.
Before they can test these ideas, researchers are interested in finding out how supporters of Welsh rugby first think about their own and fellow fans' support for their team.
