Aled Brew, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau have all been nominated for awards by players at the Ospreys, Blues and Scarlets in the upcoming Welsh Rugby Players Association presentation evening on Wednesday 29th June.
Aled and Dan will be competing with Casey Laulala and Sam Warburton for the WRPA Players’ Player of the Season Award to be announced at the WRPA Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 29th June.
The awards are the flagship event for the WRPA and recognise the on-field achievements of the WRPA members throughout the playing season.
Players were not allowed to vote for players in their own region. This was to ensure that loyalties were put aside and members voted for who they thought had impressed them this season.
Toby has been nominated alongside Warburton, Jonathan Davies and George North for the Young Player of the Season Award.
The results will not be revealed until the awards ceremony in June. WRPA President Rhys Williams has said “the ceremony is shaping up to be an exciting event. Voting has been extremely close for both awards. It is a remarkable achievement to be recognised as the best by your own peers.”
A panel of BBC Sport experts will also vote for their Try of the Season.
For the first time this year, current WRPA members have been asked to pick three regional or international players since the formation of the WRPA in 2003 to be inducted in to the WRPA’s Hall of Fame.
The Awards ceremony is to take place at the Holland House Hotel, Cardiff on Wednesday 29th June. Tickets are still available at £75 + VAT per person. The evening will be hosted by Scrum V’s Phil Steel and will feature many current and former regional and international players. For booking please contact Sam McIntyre on 029 2067 4430 or e-mail smcintyre@wrpa.co.uk.
The WRPA was established in 2003 to protect and promote the interests of professional rugby players in Wales. The association has over 200 members and is made up of two executive committee members from each region – Gethin Jenkins and Jamie Roberts (Cardiff Blues), Ashley Smith and Luke Charteris (Dragons), Jonathan Thomas and Duncan Jones (Ospreys), Rob McCusker and Andy Fenby (Scarlets).
