Throughout the group stages of this seasons tag tournament it was clear that Gilwern and Marshfield were going to challenge for the top honour. They did not disappoint.
On a miserable night in term of the weather conditions both teams produced some breathtaking rugby and showed effort and commitment in abundance. The game was a tense affair as both teams cancelled each other out. As the Dragons emerged from the players’ tunnel, which prompted Dragons community officer & referee Janice Chappell to blow the final whistle, the score was 3 tries to two in favour of Marshfield Primary, courtesy of a last gasp try.
The outcome was that Marshfield Primary School were crowned Melin Homes Challenge Trophy Champions 2011 in front of the 5,000 strong crowd. All the youngster were delighted that they had not only experienced playing on Rodney Parade but on reaching the final out of over 60 schools. The trophies, shields and cup were presented by Dragons star & Welsh Sevens captain, Jevon Groves and Melin Homes Director of Community & Enterprise, Adrian Huckin and Principle Officer, Caroline Morgan.
Adrian Huckin said: “It was an outstanding performance and both teams should be proud of their performance. Melin has supported this competition for a number of years and we are delighted that over 60 Gwent Regional Primary schools entered the competition this year.”
The Most Valuable Player Award was presented by Jevon to deserved winner, Rhys Jones of Marshfield who was probably the difference between the two teams. Two other special Melin Homes fair play awards went to Megan Powell of Gilwern and Seren Williams of Marshfield. These were presented by Caroline for the effort, hard work and fair play they displayed, similar to the work ethic at Melin.
Mike Sage, tournament organiser, commenting on the match said, “I knew from the onset there was going to be a friendly but serious rivalry as both team were eager to impress. The two schools conducted themselves in a most professional manner and were a credit to the school, their parents and themselves.”
The trophy will be proudly housed in Marshfield School, Newport until next years grand final, when Gilwern will be hoping it will be third time lucky having been beaten at the final hurdle for the last two years.
