Jenkins joined the region in 2011 to oversee the building and opening of the new Bisley Stand at Rodney Parade following his active role as legal counsel for the region and Rodney Parade LTD, but having supported both organisations through this transitional period, he has decided that the time is right to step down.
“My remit when I joined the Dragons as Chief Executive was short term and specific – to drive through the re-development of Rodney Parade,” he said.
“I had previously been involved in the project as legal advisor to the Dragons and when offered the opportunity to see the project through to a successful conclusion, was excited by the prospect of contributing further albeit with a more commercial focus as Chief Executive.
“I am immensely proud of what we have achieved here at Rodney Parade. Delivering such a significant project on time and on budget has been a credit to all involved”.
The first phase of the Rodney Parade regeneration was completed in September with the new Bisley Stand opening its doors for the Dragons’ home league opener against Aironi in September.
“The development of the Bisley Stand was a significant challenge for us and Mike’s role was to oversee the finance and development of this ambitious project,” said Dragons Chairman Martyn Hazell.
“His contribution has been invaluable in ensuring that both the Dragons and Newport have the corporate facilities to underpin rugby in the region and we thank him for his hard work and dedication to this project. Both the region and Rodney Parade are in a position to move forward and we have a strong team at Rodney Parade to make that happen.
“I’d like to take the opportunity to wish Mike and his family the best of luck for the future.”
Rodney Parade’s redevelopment is seen as a key part, not only of the future sustainability of regional and club rugby at Rodney Parade, but also of the conference and events industry for south east Wales.
“The new development at Rodney Parade is first class and not only provides the club with excellent training and playing facilities but also offers an excellent hospitality, training and leisure facility which is much needed in the city centre in Newport,” said Jenkins. “I wish all associated with the Dragons, Newport RFC and Rodney Parade continued success on and off the field”.
The date for Jenkins’ departure will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
