In their first fixture of the season in the U18 age grade championship, RGC 1404 slipped to a 27-13 defeat to the Dragons at Pandy Park.
After a narrow loss to the Blues on the opening day, the Dragons enjoyed their first taste of action at the home of Cross Keys when they secured a narrow win over the Ospreys. And although they were pegged back from an early 10-0 lead, Rob Sidoli’s men held on for another victory.
The Dragons started the game impressively and were ahead inside a minute with winger Tomas Williams touching down to give his side a fast start. Fly-half Angus O’Brien added the conversion and kicked a penalty as the Dragons pulled 10-0 clear.
O’Brien’s opposite number Morgan Williams then single handedly dragged his team back into the game as RGC fought back. The outside-half kicked a penalty before he crossed for a try himself after half an hour. Williams converted his own score and all of a sudden the teams were level.
Williams then gave his side the lead in the 35th minute with another penalty but this was as good as it got for RGC as they failed to score another point thereafter.
Two second-half tries from centre Tyler Morgan and a second from Williams saw the Dragons pull well clear and while O’Brien only managed to convert the last of these second-half scores, his team were ultimately fairly comfortable winners.
In the only U18 game taking place this week, the Scarlets travel to Llandarcy tonight to take on the Ospreys in a rearranged fixture. (KO 7.15pm)
