Sam Cross named sevens skipper

Nick Wakley has confirmed that international sevens player Sam Cross will captain the Dragons sevens squad at the Premiership Rugby Sevens Tournament (Saturday 26th July, KO 19:15).

The 22-year-old recently signed a contract with Welsh premiership side Newport RFC and has honours from the Welsh Students and GB Student.

Experienced sevens player Cross commented: “It’s great to be back playing sevens and playing for the Dragons in their first Premiership Sevens tournament at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

“I have come on a lot this year with sevens, including playing on the IRB circuit, which was a great experience. So I want to try and help bring the boys on who have played a bit of sevens before and give advice to the ones without experience."

Talking about the players he will be playing alongside in the tournament, Cross said, "I think that the squad are looking good. Its a great development tool brining youngsters through as well as using players through the premiership feeder clubs.

“It’s up to the boys now to step up and play the game so if we all dig in and help each other then we should do well on the weekend.”

Dragons sevens head coach, Nick Wakely added: “I chose Sam to be captain as I have had a lot of dealings with him before. He knows exactly what I expect on the field and has a fantastic sevens career already established, which made it a pretty obvious choice.

“I have seen him then come on with his international career and he is doing a fantastic job this year. He is a great communicator on and off the field and he is going to play a lot of minutes for us during this tournament.”

Wakley has had to make one change to the Newport Gwent Dragons sevens squad due to registration issues. Ed Tellwright has been discounted from the squad and Wales international sevens star Matthew Pewtner has taken his place in the squad, as young gun Angus O’Brien moves into the reserves alongside Scott Matthews.
