Boobs v Balls Charity Day at Bedwas RFC

Bedwas RFC was transformed on Sunday 21st September as the Club played host to an awareness and fundraising day on behalf of a breast and testicular cancer charity.

A local ladies’ Zumba group opened the event with a colourful and challenging display of Zumba dancing on the main field in warm sunshine. After forty minutes of pulsating music and lively dance no one could challenge the fitness of the dancers. A key message of the day was how fitness not only improves health and wellbeing but can help stave other pernicious diseases like cancer.

A range of stalls, refreshments and children’s activities helped promote a “funday” atmosphere to what was in reality a serious and thought provoking event.

After the Zumba came a session of rugby skills and fitness training with all and sundry, boys and girls men and women all eager to get involved to demonstrate their own skills or their capacity for improvement! Water breaks were essential as the sun shone down in glorious sunshine from a blue September sky.

The enthusiastic amateurs on the field were joined by some more serious players from Bedwas RFC including Dan Preece, Simon Grainger, Tom Rowlands, Luke Crane, Lewis Hudd and Rhys Hutcherson; serious players they might have been but nevertheless they entered fully into the spirit of the day engaging with the crowd and proving great ambassadors for the host club.

After the training came the real thing with a spirited and competitive game of mixed sexes touch rugby superbly organised and refereed by visiting Newport Gwent Dragons, James Benjamin and James Thomas”

After some two hours of exercise in the warm afternoon everyone was glad to see the final whistle. What a great day; what a great message “stay fit to stay healthy” and what a great outcome – hundreds of pounds for really worthwhile charities.

Well done the organisers, well done all the participants and well done Bedwas RFC for hosting the event. What a great club!!
