Dragons v Castres Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons have now qualified for the European Rugby Challenge Cup after beating Castres 31-18 in a bonus point win at Rodney Parade.

The Men of Gwent took the spoils thanks to tries from Hallam Amos, Nic Cudd, Elliot Dee and Ashton Hewitt and the boot of Man of the Match Jason Tovey.

It was international Hallam Amos who flew out of the starting blocks as he scored a lovely try in under a minute. It was a Castres knock on that saw scrum half Sarel Pretorius scoop up the ball, who passed to Jason Tovey who set up Amos for the first try of the evening. Tovey converted the try and then went onto slot a penalty over the posts soon after.

It was Castres who were next to add points to the scoreboard with a penalty kick over the post, however soon after they were left with 14men on the pitch after tighthead Lucas Martinez was sent to the sin-bin for illegal scrummaging. It was just a few minutes later when the Welsh Region scored their second try of the evening with Cudd claiming the spoils. Once again Tovey converted the try.

It was just after the 30 minute marker when the Dragons sealed another try, as flanker Lewis Evans barged over the the whitewash – with a conversion from Tovey to see the scores hit 22-3. But Castres were able to score their first try before the half time whistle therefore narrowing the scores to 22-10.

Half Time: Dragons 22 – Castres 10

Its was the opposition who came out of the changing rooms in the second half well and after 10 minutes of pressure they went over the try-line as Christophe Samson went over but the conversion was missed.

Palis slotted another penalty over the sticks before the home team found their feet after Castres’ Alexandre Bias saw red for a dangerous tackle. With ten minutes left on the clock it was young winger Ashton Hewitt who crossed the whitewash with the conversion from Tovey securing the bonus point win.
