Newport Gwent Dragons are delighted to announce that powerful hooker Darran Harris has signed a deal with the Region.

The 23-year-old will join up with the Men of Gwent this summer to prepare for the upcoming season. He joins the Dragons from English Championship side Rotherham Titans.

Born in Brecon, Harris began playing his rugby at Brecon RFC as a prop before progressing to the youth ranks of Merthyr RFC. Harris was then rewarded with a call up into the Cardiff Blues Age Grade system and then made the move to Pontypridd RFC. It was during his time under Dale McIntosh that Harris made the decision to move from prop to hooker. In 2013 Harris was part of the Pontypridd squad that went on to win the Principality Premiership and the SWALEC Cup.

He then moved onto Llanelli RFC and in-time was called up to the Scarlets before leaving the Region to join current club Rotherham Titans.

Harris also has international caps for Wales U20s, Wales U18s and Wales U16s.

After signing his contract, Darran Harris commented: “I’m delighted to have joined the Dragons. They are a great team with huge potential as demonstrated during the last two European Rugby Challenge Cup campaigns. Hopefully I can add to what seems to be a competitive environment.”

He continued: “I am looking forward to coming home to Wales and playing alongside many familiar faces, one of which being Sam Hobbs who is also a Brecon Boy.

“I cannot wait to get stuck into pre-season and work alongside Kingsley (Jones) and Ceri (Jones) who I believe can add a lot to my game.”

Dragons Head Coach, Kingsley Jones added: “Darran is an exciting prospect with fantastic pace and power.

“Having spent last season in the English Championship with Rotherham his set piece play has developed measurably and he will bring competition for places.

“Darran is a great addition to our squad.”

Harris is the sixth new signing the Dragons have made for the forth-coming season, these include Pat Howard, Sam Hobbs, Sam Beard, Nick Macleod and Craig Mitchell. They join Cory Hill, Matthew Screech, Ollie Griffiths, James Benjamin, Ashton Hewitt, Dorian Jones, George Gasson, Keagan Bale, Connor Edwards, Leon Brown and Harrison Keddie who have all extended their contracts with the Region.
