James Benjamin Signs Three Year Contract

Head Coach Bernard Jackman has confirmed James Benjamin is the latest player to commit his future to the Dragons by signing a new three-year contract.

After graduating from the Dragons Academy and regional age grade teams, the 23 year-old back row forward made a memorable debut in 2013 as the Dragons secured victory over Wasps at Rodney Parade.

He has represented Bedwas, Cross Keys and Pontypool and turned heads during his time in the Principality Premiership, with selection for Wales under-20s for their match against France in October 2013.

Benjamin has also stepped into the Sevens scene for his country after joining the Wales squad in South Africa in 2015. He went onto score a try for Wales 7s on his debut against Australia in the Bowl final in the final leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series at Twickenham in 2016.  This added to the Sevens success he enjoyed with his region the previous year, as the Dragons claimed victory over Wasps to lift the 2015 Singha Sevens title at Twickenham Stoop.

“James is a product of Bassaleg Comprehensive and is one of the most skillful footballers in our region,” said Bernard Jackman, who has included Benjamin in the match-day squad for all but two of the Dragons’ matches this season in all competitions.

“Having spent last season on the World Sevens Circuit, it’s important we recognize the role Gareth Williams and the Wales Sevens played in his development.

“I feel that James has potential for huge further growth as he physically develops. His signing for a further three seasons is a real boost for the Dragons.

James Benjamin added, “The Dragons squad is full of talented young players from our region and I’m excited to continue my time with the region by signing a new three-year contract.

“I’ve enjoyed playing Sevens for Wales and whenever you get the chance to represent your country it’s a great honour, but I’m enjoying playing for the Dragons as we face a crucial run of fixtures through December and into the New Year.”

Benjamin is the latest player to extend his stay with the Region joining Welsh Internationals Elliot Dee, Leon Brown and Ollie Griffiths, as well as youngsters Jack Dixon and Joe Davies, in signing three-year contracts.
