Amos - Let's hit the ground running

Hallam Amos has called on the Dragons to hit the ground running in the Guinness PRO14 – admitting the first block of fixtures can set the tone for the season.

Dragons kick-off the new campaign against Benetton Rugby at Rodney Parade on Saturday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

Amos has spoken about his excitement about being involved with the new-look Dragons and the attacking options now available to Head Coach Bernard Jackman.

And he admits he is ready and happy to operate on the wing or full back to bring the best out of the team.

“We’re all raring to go on Saturday. It’s a huge first month and the team we are putting out is definitely one of the strongest I have been involved in for a while,” said Amos.

“The number of internationals we have involved in the starting line-up is unprecedented in my eight years here.

“After the season we had last year we just need to win. This first block of six games before Europe we have some tough fixtures but also some winnable ones that can set the tone.

“It all starts Saturday and training has been good and we are looking forward to it.

“It’s the old adage, but I imagine I will play a bit of both (wing and full back), added Amos. “Rob Howley has spoken to Bernard (Jackman) about it and I’m very happy.

“If I’m selected on the wing I am happy because Jordan (Williams) is a class player. I’ve played with him a few times over the years and he has some of the best footwork I’ve ever seen and can be devastating.

“As a back line we have a lot of talent now and if we can get some decent ball we should see some special stuff.”

Saturday’s visitors Benetton Rugby have enjoyed an impressive two-year spell under coach Kieran Crowley.

The Italians finished tenth in 2016/17 and qualified for the Champions Cup, before narrowly missing out on European rugby last campaign, coming fifth in Conference B. And Amos knows the Dragons will face a stern examination on day one.

“Benetton are strong now and had a good season last year,” he said.

“They beat us at home which was a very disappointing game. We didn’t enjoy that in the wet so hopefully it stays dry this weekend. We need to get a result after last season.”
