Hill - We Owed The Fans Derby Success

Proud captain Cory Hill praised his Dragons after the dramatic derby day victory over Ospreys at Rodney Parade and admitted: ‘We owed the fans one’.

Hill led from the front as Dragons edged out their Welsh rivals 23-22 in a tense and exhilarating encounter.

And after the game he admitted a turning point had been the decision to turn down a shot at goal and instead go to the corner which led to a decisive try from Elliot Dee.

“We took a chance by going to the corner this week rather than the posts and came away with seven points. It was a massive turning point in the game,” said Hill.

“It’s been in our armoury and it managed to come off, sending Brandon (Nansen) around the tail to try and get over Sam [Davies], then we worked hard around the corner. Elliot Dee is a poacher and a pick and go did it.”

“We had a tight one against the Blues at the Arms Park when we felt that we deserved something out of it and finally we have got the result,” he added.

“We knew that we had to match the Ospreys’ physicality. We knew that they were going to come around the corner first phase, they have done that for years and are really good at it.

“The Ospreys bench came on and added a lot; they had two playmakers and were going wide, so we knew that our scramble defence had to be top-notch.

“Credit to the boys, they scrambled and it showed how much it meant to us. We owed the fans one.

“James Chapron has taken over the defence and there have just been a couple of clear messages to keep progressing from what Bernard (Jackman) was doing.

“We are progressing every week, working hard for each other and reaping the rewards.”
