A great birthday present - Dee

Dragons hooker Elliot Dee is set for his first international start against Italy in the NatWest Six Nations clash at the Principality Stadium on Sunday as Wales target a return to winning ways.

Confirmation of the team for Sunday’s clash coincided with Dee’s 24th birthday and he will line-up in the forwards alongside Dragons captain Cory Hill and Pontypool product Taulupe Faletau, who lead his country for the first time as he wins his 71st cap.

“It’s a great birthday present for me, finding out I was going to get the start on Sunday, on my birthday this week,” said Newbridge product Dee.

“I might leave the birthday celebrations a couple of weeks and see if I get a bit of a break, and then I’ll take the time to celebrate.

“I’m really looking forward to the game – I have had a taste of what it’s like to play for Wales off the bench, so it’ll be good for me to have the experience of starting in the Stadium.

“I think it’s a great game to come in and with a couple of the other boys having a chance it pushes people on to push for more starts.

“It’s always great to play with familiar faces and friends, and I think you get the most out of each other.

“Training this week has been spot on really and it has been really good all the way through. There is obviously a bit of pressure on us now to get a result at home and I think after two tough losses on the road then that is what the fans want to see – they want to see a win in the stadium. We are targeting that and hopefully Sunday can be a good day for us.

“We know there is pressure on us and we want to try and win the last two games. The fans have seen glimpses of what we can do with the ball in hand. I think we were shut down for periods of the Irish game, but I think in the end when we started to come back and move the ball around it was exciting stuff, and that is what people want to see really.

“The support on social media and the messages of support from Dragons fans have been brilliant and it has been brilliant for me personally. I am looking forward to getting back and getting back out on the field against the Cheetahs, if selected.”
