Dragons v Toyota Cheetahs Match Report

The Dragons lost out to Guinness PRO14 newcomers Toyota Cheetahs this evening at Rodney Parade.

Despite a seven-point lead at half time the Men of Gwent failed to secure the win suffering a 29-17 defeat in their last home game of the season.

The match began well for the home side as scrum-half Sarel Pretorius went over the whitewash thanks to a lovely break by Arwel Robson – only for the man in the middle, Nigel Owens, to chalk off the try after going to the TMO.

However, the Dragons had another opportunity soon after with a neat pass from Welsh International Hallam Amos to fellow wing Ashton Hewitt seeing the young wing go over. Fly-half Arwel Robson converted Hewitt’s try seeing the Dragons lead after 15 minutes.

The visitors took their opportunity after the Dragons were penalised, and kicked a penalty in the 20th minute, only for the Men of Gwent go ahead through the boot of Arwel Robson with a 25m drop goal.

Half Time: Dragons 10 – Toyota Cheetahs 3

The Toyota Cheetahs came out of the starting blocks fast and it was their full-back and Man of the Match Clayton Blommetjies who made use of a gap in the Dragons defence to go over for their first try, with the conversion coming from Niel Marais.

It wasn’t long after this the South Africans hammered away at the line, which saw fly-half Fred Zeilinga make it through to go over, making it 15-10, with a successful conversion coming from Marais once again.

A few more chances came the hosts way, but unfortunately, the slippery conditions got worsened due to the rain. However, the visitors didn’t seem phased as they went over for their third try of the evening – Sibhale Maxwane’s second.

Welsh International hooker Elliot Dee was next to go over with a successful conversion from Robson with just under 10 minutes to go, however, it was the visitors who sealed the win seeing Blommetjies go over for his second and a conversion coming from Zeilinga.
