Basham eager to front up

26/10/2019

Young back row forward Taine Basham admits Dragons need to ‘front up’ when they tackle Glasgow Warriors at Rodney Parade today (kick-off 3pm).

Dragons are looking to respond after a defeat last time out on home soil against Connacht.

And Basham, who started at seven, is expecting big challenge against an attack-minded Glasgow side.

“Glasgow can play from anywhere and play a good brand of rugby so it should be an entertaining game and good test,” he said.

“We were disappointed as a forward pack against Connacht and this week is a second chance to come out on top and show we can front up.

“Zebre was a great result for us, to get that win after so many years away from home. We took great confidence from that.

“But then against Connacht, and we can’t blame the conditions, we didn’t play as well as them and it suited them. There is no excuse, we have got to be better.”

Basham has recently committed his future to the region, signing new terms alongside six other Dragons Academy graduates.

And the dynamic 19-year-old has spoken about how much he is enjoying with new Director of Dragons Rugby, Dean Ryan.

“It’s good to commit my future to Dragons. I’m just looking to improve and stay on the right tracks here,” he revealed.

“As I’ve said before, I come from Gwent and I want to play in Gwent for this region. “Dean is demanding, but in a good way,” he smiled.

“He wants the best from us and wants this week to get a reaction from us because last week we didn’t front up.

“With the younger boys coming through, he wants us to push the seniors for a starting spot and not go through the motions. Both on and off the field, he wants us to push.

“I’m looking to improve all the aspect of my game and try to get better. I want to be that complete player and see how far I can go.”
