Solid Dixon gives Ryan selection choice

03/12/2020

Boss Dean Ryan has praised the performance of centre Jack Dixon in the victory over Italy - and insists the centre will fully deserve more game time if selected this weekend in Glasgow.

Dixon was introduced in the opening half hour against Benetton Rugby after an injury to Adam Warren and slotted in at outside centre alongside Jamie Roberts.

The hard-hitting 25-year-old impressed in the 26-19 win, despite playing in an unaccustomed role, and his display was certainly noted by the Director of Dragons Rugby.

“I thought Jack looked pretty solid,” said Ryan. “It was a big midfield with himself and Jamie so I think he did a really good job.

“Defensively he looked really solid after he made an error early on which sort of sharpened him up when he realised he needed to be wider.

“He looked really solid in that situation and gives us big men on the frontline.

“I was really pleased for Jack that we could get him playing and at 13 he was quite comfortable going there and being part of that.

“I don’t think it’s needs must this weekend, I think he warrants a selection. We definitely will look at Jack as an option for us there.”

Ryan has, however, indicated that Dragons could look at changes with the league game being played on an artificial 4G pitch at Scotstoun Stadium.

“You have to think about it because a plastic pitch tends to be a bit faster, certainly ruck speed is a bit faster and you can then look at some of the challenges that might face some people,” he said.

“We are just thinking about what will be the right team for us to take and go and try and get something in Glasgow.

“I do think we will make a couple of changes,” he added. “We have got to look at what our strengths will be on that surface.

“I won’t be surprised to see changes. That’s building the squad and also knowing that we can probably add some different things into a game giving the nature of the surface.”
