Basham back for European opener

10/12/2021

Flanker Taine Basham returns to the starting line-up alongside Wales international Elliot Dee as Dragons kick-off the European Challenge Cup against Perpignan at Stade Aime Giral on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm UK time).

Boss Dean Ryan makes a total of seven changes to his team for the Round One fixture in the south of France.

Basham is back alongside captain Harri Keddie and Aaron Wainwright in the back row while there is also a call-up for second row Joe Davies to partner Will Rowlands.

Hooker Dee packs down alongside Aki Seiuli and the recalled Mesake Doge up front.

In the back line, scrum half Tavis Knoyle will start his first game for Dragons since January while Adam Warren is named at outside centre alongside Aneurin Owen.

The final change is a return for on loan wing Jordan Olowofela, with Jonah Holmes moving to full back for the European clash.

Wales international Ben Carter is named among the replacements alongside the likes of back row Dan Baker and centre Jamie Roberts.

Ryan said: “We know what to expect. They will be big, come around the corner and have lots of players in the back field who can counter-attack.

“At home they don’t often disappoint so we have to be very aware of the threat they pose.

“I have been there (Perpignan) as a player and coach, where we played in front of a full house in the new stadium. It was a daunting place to go, and I am expecting no less this weekend. We’re excited to get started.”
