Junior clubs, youth clubs and girls hubs from across our region are all set to battle it out - in the first-ever Dragons Virtual Cup!
The Dragons Cup takes place every season and generates huge interest amongst junior club rugby across our region. The cup and plate competitions, that run from under 12s up to youth level, have grown in participation numbers and popularity over the years.
This season due to the Covid-19 pandemic the Dragons Cup cannot take place as normal – so instead the Dragons Community team are taking it into the virtual world and online!
The new Dragons Virtual Cup, in association with District A GMG and supported by our Community Headline partner, Centerprise International, will see 128 teams from Under-12s to Under-17s and youth and girls hubs all compete in online voting!
The first draw takes place this Friday (January 29) before the 64 games in Round One kick-off the week commencing February 1, with ties throughout the week.
Supporters, players and families can all get involved with the polling on the Dragons Community twitter account – DRA_Community
Mike Sage, Community Manager at Dragons, said: “The Dragons Virtual Cup is an exciting and innovative way for us to engage with all our clubs during a challenging time.
“Our thanks go to District A GMG also Community Headline partner, Centerprise International, who are both supporting this cup competition.
“A total of 128 teams go into the hat for the Round One draw and we will have a signed framed Dragons jersey for the winners come the final in March. Good luck to all the teams.”
Gwyn Lloyd, Co-Lead of the WRU District A Game Management Group, said: “The GMG and the Community Team of Dragons Rugby have had a unique close working relationship for many years.
“Together, we are running the Virtual Dragons Cup to encourage engagement for clubs with their teams and to keep rugby in the minds of our children and young people.
“Today sees the launch of the cup, putting the 128 junior, youth and girls hubs in the region against one another - the same number of teams who enter the FA Cup first round!
“We hope that the teams, their players and supporters enjoy the virtual cup. I look forward to seeing who wins!”
The Round One draw takes place this Friday (January 29) before the Dragons Virtual Cup kicks-off next week.
