Moriarty to lead against Warriors

27/05/2021

Dean Ryan has confirmed Number Eight Ross Moriarty will once again captain Dragons this weekend as he bids to grow the leadership skills of the Wales international.

Moriarty, 27, led the team in the narrow defeat to Cardiff Blues and again skipper as they face Glasgow Warriors in the Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday evening (kick-off 7.35pm).

"We are going with Ross again," said the Director of Dragons Rugby.

"I like it when he gets a bit tasty and lots of people then take notice, so if we want to be physical then there is nothing better than putting Ross in the middle of the group.

"He has got huge respect within the group; he doesn't speak very often but when he does people listen.

"I am keen to grow his leadership skills and also make people more aware of how much we value him."

Ryan has looked to other faces to captain the second half of the season when regular skipper Rhodri Williams is absent. Harrison Keddie, Sam Davies and Aaron Wainwright have all led the Dragons and Ryan believes it is a vital experience in their own development.

"It's about growing individuals and captaincy is an endorsement of we think of them and what they do," added Ryan.

"Rhodri has been an outstanding captain in terms of technical and tactical aspects, we have used this to sort of shift it around and look at more emotive leaders, like Harrison who has been outstanding.

"Ross has been the same, Waino is growing into that space as well about how to lead via example and the few pieces that he does say.

"It's just giving them some confidence and widening the group that understand how much people look to them and how much respect people have for what they say."

I am keen to grow his leadership skills and also make people more aware of how much we value him...
