Dragons Name Team to Tackle Edinburgh

26/11/2021

Dragons boss Dean Ryan has named his side to take on Scottish rivals Edinburgh in the United Rugby Championship at Rodney Parade on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 5:15pm).

The fixture will see the return of competitive action following the international break and Dragons have made numerous changes following their last outing against Cardiff at the Arms Park.

Young prop Chris Coleman will make his first start of the season in the front row and is joined by hooker Taylor Davies and loosehead Greg Bateman.

Among the front row replacements is the return of Welsh international Leon Brown who is in line to make his first appearance of the season for the region.

Ben Carter partners Joe Maksymiw in the second row following his time away with Wales, while the back row sees Harri Keddie captain the side at six and Ollie Griffiths lines up at number eight.

Man of the moment Taine Basham - fresh off his new contract announced earlier this week - starts in the seven jersey following an impressive Autumn Series with Wales.

Another returning international, Gonzalo Bertranou, starts at scrum half after time away with Argentina and is partnered by Sam Davies at fly half.

Jack Dixon keeps his place in the thirteen jersey but has a new partner with the returning and experienced Jamie Roberts back from injury at inside centre.

Rio Dyer, Jonah Holmes and Jordan Williams complete the side as the back three remains unchanged from the game with Cardiff last time out.

“Edinburgh are very different challenge from what they were last year,” said Dean Ryan.

“They are looking to be much more adventurous, looking for opportunities in games and creating opportunities in games.

“They are probably closer to the Glasgow model and aligning to where the Scotland philosophy is travelling to. I’m conscious of the threat that they bring.

“We have looked at them and know they are looking to really expand their game and create more threat. We have got to take on that challenge.”

Dragons: Jordan Williams, Jonah Holmes, Jack Dixon, Jamie Roberts, Rio Dyer, Sam Davies, Gonzalo Bertranou; Greg Bateman, Taylor Davies, Chris Coleman, Ben Carter, Joe Maksymiw, Harri Keddie (c), Taine Basham, Ollie Griffiths.

Replacements: Ellis Shipp, Josh Reynolds, Leon Brown, Joe Davies, Huw Taylor, Dan Babos, Aneurin Owen, Jordan Olowofela
