Generations gather for Sporting Memories celebration

06/04/2022

Dragons welcomed Sporting Memories Wales club members from across South Wales and young pupils from Maindee Primary School for a brilliant multi-generational day of fun and celebration to mark the charity’s ‘Croeso Week’ in late March.

Croeso Week shined a spotlight on the activity of Sporting Memories Wales across the country, and how its clubs allow older people, the members of the clubs, the opportunity to socialise and be physically active across Wales.

Thanks to the support of Dragons Community, the main event of the week was held at Rodney Parade and saw over 100 people from across Newport and South Wales come together for a day which included singing, dancing, a fitness and exercise class as well as a Welsh rugby quiz which tested knowledge from the 1960s to the modern day.

Year Five and Six pupils from nearby Maindee Primary School got the event off to a brilliant start by singing songs they had created especially for the day before they later teamed up with club members on their tables to help them with the quiz!

There was also the chance for everyone to get up and active through a dance and exercise session where everyone in attendance was moving to classic songs from Tom Jones and the Beatles!

The event also provided an opportunity for generations to connect locally as pupils from Maindee were invited to join club members to find out more about their experiences and memories of sport across Wales as well as their lives locally.

Reflecting on a brilliant day, Rob Baker, the Project Coordinator for the Healthy and Active Fund (HAF) in Wales, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people, from all ages and backgrounds, attend this important event in Newport for Sporting Memories. It really goes to show the power of uniting communities through such a brilliant medium such as sport.

“I think what made it more special was that all the members from our attending clubs across South Wales and the pupils from Maindee got into the spirit of the day, and it was great to see so many of them conversing and helping each other, particularly with the tough quiz at the end!

“I’d also like to thank Dragons Rugby for hosting us at Rodney Parade – it’s a fantastic community club and they really made a great effort to make it an inclusive event for everyone who attended.”
