Five star Under-18s defeat Scarlets

09/02/2022

Dragons Academy Under-18s set-up a winner takes all shootout for the Regional Age Grade Championship title as they swept past Scarlets 35-3 at Ystrad Mynach on Wednesday evening.

Tries from Jack Woods, Charlie Harkins, Morgan Williams, Nick Thomas and captain Harri Ackerman saw Dragons power to success.

The result means the undefeated Dragons top the table and face second place Cardiff Rugby at the Arms Park next Wednesday for the crown.

Scarlets took a third minute lead courtesy of a penalty before Dragons took the lead on 10 minutes.

A great initial turnover by winger Ioan Duggan launched an attack before a brilliant solo try by fly half Woods, who spotted a gap and collected his own chip over the top to score. Woods converted.

Dragons continued to carve out opportunities and even a yellow card to Gethyn Cannon for a late tackle failed to halt momentum.

A second home try arrived just before the half hour mark as Number Eight Harkins powered over from close range after a strong driving maul. Woods added the extras.

And a third try was scored on the stroke of half-time, with prop Morgan Williams dropping on a free ball to score. Woods made it three from three off the tee for a 21-3 advantage at the break.

Two minutes after the restart the bonus point was secured, Nick Thomas hitting a lovely running line to score under the posts following some patient attacking play. Woods again converted.

Man-of-the-match Ackerman continued his try scoring run and added late gloss as more controlled play saw him power over, with Sonny Greenman converting.
