Young building on special moment

22/02/2022

Back row George Young is determined to build on the success of making his senior debut – and insists he has the right coaches and team-mates around him to continue to kick-on.

The Dragons Academy hot prospect officially become the 310th player to represent the region when he came on the final ten minutes of the United Rugby Championship clash with Ulster at Rodney Parade.

Not even the miserable conditions could dampen the moment for the 20-year-old who immediately unloaded some big tackles to introduce himself to the game.

And flanker Young – son of former Newport forward Robert – is ready to make sure he uses the experience to continue his eye-catching progress for Dean Ryan’s men.

“It was really windy, wet and pretty unforgettable conditions, but also really pleasing for me to get on and make my senior debut,” said Young.

“It was good to get the last ten minutes and it helps having senior players like Ollie (Griffiths) and Harri (Keddie) around you for support.

“I didn’t enjoy the result, but it’s a big moment for me and one I hope I can kick on from now.

“I was supposed to be playing for Newport, but then I got told I might make it on the bench and then got the nod on Friday morning,” he added.

“There were some nerves, that’s only natural, but I actually slept okay the night before and just wanted to get on and try and make an impression.

“It’s special to run out in front of that terrace and I just wanted to get that first tackle in - and get warm in the process. It was nasty conditions!

“I’ve had a taste and now it’s about looking to repeat it, so the focus is on Munster and looking to be involved again.

“I know I’ve still lots to learn, but I’ve got good players and coaches around me and I’m excited about the future.”
