Benjamin & Shipp Sign New Contracts

26/01/2022

Hooked in! Dragons are pleased to announce homegrown front row duo James Benjamin and Ellis Shipp have signed new contracts.

Benjamin, 27, and Shipp, 24, both originally progressed through the Dragon Academy and age grade set-up and have now put pen to paper on new terms to remain at their home region.

They join fellow Academy graduates Taine Basham, Aneurin Owen, Rio Dyer, Chris Coleman, Josh Reynolds and Luke Yendle in agreeing fresh terms in recent months.

“We’re pleased that both players have re-signed and will look to compete with the likes of Elliot Dee and Bradley Roberts for selection,” said Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby.

“Jumbo (Benjamin) has worked hard to transition his position to hooker, and we’ve been pleased by his dedication and eagerness to learn. He’s a talented rugby player who we are keen to get on the field.

“Ellis will also now look to work hard and keep improving to earn senior opportunities.”

Former Wales Under-20s and Sevens international Benjamin – who has converted to hooker having played back row and centre for Dragons – has made 68 appearances for the Men of Gwent, scoring five tries.

“I’m extremely pleased and very grateful for the opportunity,” said Benjamin.

“We spoke about a positional change 18 months ago and I have learnt a whole new set of skills and it’s been an exciting time for me.

“I’ve had some opportunities this season, with the first team and on loan at Cornish Pirates, and now I want to build on that.

“I’ve had a huge amount of support and feel this is a great environment to keep learning.”

Former Wales Under-20s international Shipp made his regional debut in 2017 and has 31 appearances for Dragons, scoring three tries.

“I’m really happy to sign for my home region, where I’ve been since I was 15. Now I’m looking forward to the future and developing more,” said Shipp.

“It’s a great place to be, with a lot of young boys all working hard together, and it’s now about keeping my head down and looking to improve.”
