Dragons are set to be boosted by the return of Argentina international Gonzalo Bertranou for the EPCR Challenge Cup showdown with Section Paloise on Saturday evening (kick-off 5.30pm UK time).
Pumas ace Bertranou is yet to feature for the Men of Gwent this season after his exploits with his country at the Rugby World Cup.
But after returning to Ystrad Mynach, the 29-year-old – who has made 28 appearances for the club – is now back in contention.
And Backs Coach Matt O’Brien believes the return of scrum half could be crucial to the club’s bid at Stade de Hameau.
“Gonzalo is back available so that is great news for us,” said O’Brien, who also revealed investigations into Sio Tomkinson’s injury against Oyonnax were ongoing.
“The more players of international quality we can have in the building and available to us the better.
“Gonzalo is a real competitor and comes back after a good World Cup with Argentina so he will be keen to make an immediate impression.
“We are strong at nine this season so we hope he can carry on his form with the Pumas with the Dragons.
“We’ll go to Pau with a positive mindset,” added O’Brien. “A few players will get a chance to impress before the festive derbies and it’s a big game.
“We expect Pau to be strong, but it is a great opportunity to express ourselves and see what comes. We’re looking forward to the trip.”
