Condy calls for final effort from Under-18s

10/02/2023

Dragons RFC Under-18s Head Coach Jack Condy has encouraged his side to finish the Regional Age Grade Championship on a high – after a week that saw them claim two try bonus point wins.

The young Dragons have enjoyed two big victories on home soil this week to nail down third spot in the table.

Dragons powered to a 59-29 nine-try success over RGC Under-18s last Sunday before backing it up with a mature 29-17 win over Scarlets Under-18s on Wednesday evening.

The squad now complete the season with a trip to the capital to face Cardiff Rugby Under-18s next Wednesday (January 15).

When the two sides met earlier in the season it was Cardiff who took a narrow 7-5 win in horrendous weather conditions at Ystrad Mynach.

“The boys have nothing to lose so I will challenge them again and ask them to back this performance (against Scarlets) up,” said Condy.

“When we played Cardiff earlier in the season it was difficult with the weather, and it was hard to tell what teams were trying to do.

“Cardiff will have a good driving maul; they are very big and physical with some decent athletes on the edge. It will be a good encounter.

“We were excellent against Scarlets,” added Condy. “It was a different test against a good Scarlets team, and we asked them to be brave. They did that in defence and attack.

“We’ve challenged the players to stretch themselves. Take them out of their comfort zone, keep the ball in play and keep it fast. We achieved that.

“Scarlets played some good stuff and they cut us at times, but we sorted our spacings out, got off the line well and started being physical.

“We also tidied up our discipline, which was a quite loose in the first half, which gave them territory. But the effort and energy in defence for 70 minutes was outstanding.”

Hooker Tomoya Adachi reiterated his Head Coach’s comments and looked forward to the final fixture at Cardiff Arms Park.

“It was a good team effort, and we really came together in the game with Scarlets – that showed in the scoreboard,” he said.

“It was a tight turnaround (from Sunday’s win over RGC), but we pulled together and showed our heart.

“We feel ready for Cardiff now. We have two wins under our belt this week and we’ll look to take that confidence into the next game.”
