Reed: European win key for momentum

15/01/2023

Playmaker Will Reed believes Dragons RFC can use the crucial EPCR Challenge Cup win over Section Paloise for momentum the rest of this season.

Ashton Hewitt and Max Clark grabbed the tries in France as the Men of Gwent secured four valuable points in the quest for knockout rugby.

Reed – who grabbed eight points himself – was a pivotal figure at Stade du Hameau and now wants Dragons to use the victory as a springboard to more success.

“The win over Pau can give us that momentum going into next week and the rest of the season,” he said.

“Dai (Flanagan) had spoken at the end of the week about really enjoying the challenge of playing away in France.

“We always knew coming out here was going to be a tough encounter. But the boys fronted up and it’s big to come away with the win.

“Territory was key and fair play to the forwards they really did a job on Pau’s lineout and taking ball away from them,” he added.

“That led to us kicking well and staying in high field position.

“When you look at the European table, there are still come crucial points up for grabs.

“We’ve played Lions a couple of times already this year, we know what they are like, and we know what they are bringing.”

Reed also had a special word for the away supporters who turned up in force and made their voices heard in France.

He said: “It was class to see – I didn’t realise how many of them there were.

“They always make noise, whether it’s at Rodney Parade or away, and fair play for them travelling down here.

“They were outnumbered but we heard them, and they made a difference.”
