Basham signs new Dragons contract

09/04/2024

Homegrown and here to stay! Dragons RFC are delighted to announce Wales international Taine Basham has signed a new contract to remain with the Men of Gwent.

Basham – closing in on a century of appearances for the club – remains one of the most exciting young talents in Welsh rugby.

The 24-year-old – capped 17 times by Wales - has today ended speculation over his future by agreeing new terms to remain with his home club.

Dragons Academy product Basham joins fellow internationals Aaron Wainwright and Rio Dyer in signing a new deal with Dragons ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Head Coach Dai Flanagan: “We want to keep our best homegrown talent in Gwent, so news that Taine has agreed a new contract will rightly be celebrated by all our supporters.

“Taine joins the likes of Aaron and Rio in agreeing fresh terms and we look forward to continuing to watch important international players make a big impact and be key figures for us.

“It has always meant a huge amount to Taine to play for Dragons, he is passionate about our club, and it has been great to see him show his very best form in recent games.

“Now his future is resolved, we look forward to Taine finishing this season strongly and building on his successful career with us.”

Basham, who hails from Talywain, made his senior debut for the region in the Anglo-Welsh Cup clash with Scarlets in January 2018.

The dynamic forward came through the Dragons Academy system and impressed on the international stage with Wales Under-20s before becoming one of the rising stars of Welsh rugby. Basham made his senior Wales debut in 2021 against Canada and was part of the 2023 World Cup squad.

Basham said: “I’m really happy to sign a new contract with my home club. As a Gwent boy, it means a massive amount to me every time I pull on the jersey.

“I now look forward with excitement to playing more for the Dragons, and hopefully a reaching a century of appearances for the club.

“My thanks go to our fantastic fans for their continued support for me. I can’t wait to get back out on the field at Rodney Parade and finish this final block of the season really strongly.”
