Flanagan: We must have winning Euro mentality

18/01/2024

Head Coach Dai Flanagan will tell his Dragons to play for the win and with belief when they face Hollywoodbets Sharks with qualification on the line in the EPCR Challenge Cup this weekend.

The Men of Gwent welcome the South African giants to Rodney Parade on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 5.30pm) knowing they must get something from the game to get through to the knockout stages.

Dragons are fifth in Pool A after three games – a point behind Zebre and Section Paloise who play each other on Saturday in France – in the race for a top four finish.

The Sharks arrive in Newport top of the pool with 12 points and with a home last 16 clash on the mind.

And Flanagan has spoken about how Dragons must have the right mindset and clear heads to get the right result to progress.

“We’re going out to win at home – we have to take that approach,” insisted Flanagan.

“It’s Rodney Parade and we’ve gone three from three recently, we want to keep that run and feelgood factor going.

“It’s a big opportunity for us and we will know what we need before we kick-off.

"We are playing well at home and we want to give our fans something to cheer for.

“There will be conversations before with senior players and interventions from me during the game to ensure we get the right information on the field. But we must go out for a win.

“I’m sure Sharks will get a good welcome at Rodney Parade and I’m sure they will come to us strong,” he added.

“They will want a home game in the knockout stages, and we all have a break after this intense block, so I am sure they bring some big names.”
