O'Brien: Zebre now a different proposition

09/01/2024

Backs Coach Matt O’Brien insists Dragons must produce their best rugby when they travel to Zebre Parma – insisting the Italian side are now a different proposition.

The Men of Gwent will be back in action at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3.15pm UK) as they bid to secure knockout rugby in the EPCR Challenge Cup.

Dai Flanagan’s men opened the competition with a bonus point victory over Oyonnax before a late defeat – with a bonus point – to fellow Top 14 side Section Paloise.

Dragons occupy third place in Pool 1 – two points ahead of the Italians – but O’Brien is aware of the size of the challenge coming this weekend.

“Zebre are a different outfit to what they have been the last five or six years,” insisted O’Brien.

“They pose a real threat and have a brilliant back three that offer counterattack threat. They like to move the ball.

“They play an exciting brand of rugby, but they also have more edge to their game now with the kicking game they play.

“Zebre have been strong at home – they have beaten Sharks and drew with Cardiff – and we haven’t won out there for a number of years so we need to address that.

“We know a win should see us through - the target is a home last 16 tie,” he added.

“Our record at home is good and we would like to get a few more wins away. This weekend would be a good start for us.”

Dragons are set to welcome back Rio Dyer, Steff Hughes and Matthew Screech back into the selection mix.

However, O’Brien insists the coaching team will look to show faith in the side that defeated Scarlets.

“We’ll finalise the team over the next 48 hours – but those that had the opportunity against Scarlets took it,” he stressed.

“The young guys played well, and Dai (Flanagan) has made a point in interviews about rewarding players and you’ll see that in team selection.

“We want people fighting for the shirt and if they take that chance and perform then they will keep the shirt.”
