Rhodri Williams has backed the young Dragons to continue to develop and play a big role in the future of the club next season.
Scrum half and captain Williams admitted it had been an afternoon of frustration and missed opportunities at Cardiff City Stadium as the Men of Gwent went down 32-15 to Scarlets.
But he firmly believes the next generation of Dragons – many of whom were in action in the capital – are a huge reason to be positive about the seasons ahead.
“We go into the off season needing to recover from what has been a long season and come pre-season be ready to go and put things right,” he said.
“We had a very young back line - the exception being myself in the last game - so it’s great development for those boys and we need to build on that in pre-season.
“The future is bright with the youngsters coming through. I do believe that – I’m not just saying it because I am part of it.
“We’ve underachieved this season. The squad we have makes it frustrating. The work we do in the week makes it disappointing.
“We’ve spoken about the 60-minute mark and being better. We would have won a lot more games and we need to work on that in pre-season. I do believe there is a good group here that can kick on.”
Reflecting on the game in Cardiff, Williams added: “We were disappointed with the result. We showed good character in the second half to come back with two tries, but it is not where we want to be.
“We weren’t clinical enough in the 22 but credit also to the Scarlets for holding us out.
“Conceding just before half-time, when they had 14 men, was disappointing, we need to do things better and differently.
“We need to be more rugby smart, more clinical and put teams under pressure.”
