Dyer back for crunch Zebre clash

26/03/2024

Wales international Rio Dyer will return in the crunch BKT United Rugby Championship showdown with Zebre Parma at Rodney Parade, Head Coach Dai Flanagan has confirmed.

Dyer was not part of the squad that went toe-to-toe with Vodacom Bulls last weekend as Dragons managed his workload following the Six Nations with Wales.

But the speedster is now back in the mix as the Men of Gwent look for a big win in the league standings against the Italians.

“Rio is flying around the place and is available,” said Flanagan. “I'd be daft not to start him and it's a nice attack plan – pass to Rio!

"He is a young man who played five 80 minutes for Wales and whenever he has been available for us, we have played him.

“Rio will go on the summer tour and will play the three games, if not the four. We've got a run-in when we will probably use him in the majority of games, so at some point we had to take him out.

“Rio would be clocking up 30-plus games and that's not healthy for anyone. He reported in sore all over last week so was a high risk but now he looks unbelievable.”

On the returning Welsh internationals, Flanagan added: “All six of our Wales internationals have been superb since they have come back in the building.

“It was tough for Wales in the Six Nations, but their energy and morale has given us a spring in the step.

“The boys who played last weekend were awesome for us and we expect the same from them this Friday."
