Dragons RFC are delighted to announce that we have won Sustainable Spectator Travel Event of the Year for 2024 at the Team Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Awards.
Awarded for the great work we have done this year with the Eco Dragons campaign, we were nominated alongside Watford Football Club and Manchester City.
The award recognises the successful delivery of sustainable travel solutions for the those attending a mid to large size venue or event during the last 12 months.
On the back of winning the Welsh Sports’ Association Sustainability Award for our work last season, this further recognition of our continuing commitment to sustainable travel is something we’re extremely proud of as we look towards the future.
The Eco Dragons campaign launched ahead of the 2023/24 season at Rodney Parade with a key focus on transport and improving the way supporters travelled to home matches.
Using surveys, Dragons were able to monitor the use of public transport and promote several initiatives in order to change attitudes and perceptions around travel choices.
The response and pick-up from fans has been the most pleasing aspect, with the public buying into our attempts to safeguard the climate for future generations of Dragons supporters.
With the installation of electric car charging stations to offering free travel on the local bus network and championing electric bike usage, we managed to make a huge impact at zero cost to the business.
Teaming up with partners such as Pledgeball has given the campaign a boost with a wealth of ideas on how we can continue to give our fans an opportunity to take a stand on sustainability.
Fans online pledged to save 55,240.90kg C02e or the equivalent of taking 12.3 cars off the road for our first game. By our final home game, fans pledged to save 609,479 kg of C02e the equivalent of 132.49 cars off the road.
This continued commitment is something we are immensely proud of, however the work has not stopped yet as we enter our second season of working alongside Pledgeball to continue our work towards a green future.
