O'Brien named co-captain at Dragons

25/11/2024

Dragons RFC have today named Angus O’Brien as co-captain for the remainder of the BKT United Rugby Championship season and EPCR Challenge Cup.

O’Brien – currently in his second spell with the Men of Gwent and on 94 club appearances – has been a key figure at Dragons RFC over seven seasons.

The Caerleon-born full back, who can also play fly half, brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and versatility to the squad, and was named the Player of the Season for the 2022/23 campaign.

The 30-year-old, a product of the Dragons Academy system, has been named co-captain alongside Wales international Ben Carter, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Dragons have also announced three new vice-captains – Harri Keddie, Aneurin Owen and Matthew Screech – for the remainder of this season.

“The decision to appoint a new co-captain and vice-captain is all about shared experience, as we have a young team and leadership group,” said Interim Head Coach, Filo Tiatia.

“We want the group to keep growing in that area and the appointment of two co-captains and three vice-captains will only strengthen us.

“It’s important that anyone of those can captain this team and we grow leaders for the long-term. With the nature of the game, we will pick up injuries and so we need people to be ready to lead.

“All those selected are unique individuals who will lead in different ways and styles. But we believe there will be the right balance with how they work together.”
