Boss looks for away day boost

21/10/2024

Head Coach Dai Flanagan has called on Dragons to transfer encouraging home form on the road as they head to Galway this weekend.

The Men of Gwent face Connacht on an artificial pitch at the Dexcom Stadium as they curtains falls on block one this Saturday (kick-off 7.35pm).

Dragons have defeated Ospreys at Rodney Parade and narrowly lost out to South African duo Hollywoodbets Sharks and Emirates Lions before Benetton battled to a victory.

There has been plenty of positives on home soil – if not the victories craved – and Flanagan acknowledged a performance away from Newport is now needed.

“There is nothing easy in this league. We’ve seen that the last five weeks,” said Flanagan.

“Every team we play is packed with internationals; Benetton had 18 against us in that 23. Nothing is easy in this game.

“It just gets tougher. We go to Connacht and Galway where Leinster have just won so they will be right up for it.

“In this league nothing is a given. We need to make sure we are as competitive and function like we do at home when we go away.

“We also need to look at our discipline. We crept up the penalty count against Benetton so we need to be a lot smarter and stay engaged for as long as we can.”

Dragons could also be boosted by the return of Wales international back row Aaron Wainwright with Flanagan adding: “Waino warmed up before Benetton with the team.

“He has a few more things to tick off and he should be up for selection. He is tracking very well.”
