Co-captains back in mix for JDX showdown

15/04/2025

Head Coach Filo Tiatia has revealed co-captains Ben Carter and Angus O’Brien are back in the selection mix for the Judgement Day showdown with Scarlets on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm).

Carter has been out of action since suffering a knee injury training with Wales ahead of the autumn internationals, with the skipper then having surgery on an ankle issue.

O’Brien – who was named as co-captain after the loss of Carter in November - suffered a thumb fracture in January.

Both will now push for a place as the Men of Gwent head to the capital for Saturday’s BKT United Rugby Championship double header of derby action.

And Tiatia has spoken about the potential return of Carter with the 24-year-old from Caldicot impressing in the first block of the URC action before injury struck.

“Ben is calm around the group and is really diligent around his preparation, bringing confidence to those around him,” said Tiatia.

"He doesn’t waste his words and I really enjoy the way that he operates – he takes players with him.

“Ben has been great and if you look at the shape of him now to when he was injured it shows that he has worked hard on himself.

“He was unable to play but was diligent around the things that he could control and keep improving. He has been awesome, and I am looking forward to him being involved."

Tiatia has also revealed positive news up front with loosehead Rhodri Jones and tighthead Chris Coleman also in his thoughts after missing the recent defeat to Edinburgh.
