Dyer and Carter back for Euro opener

05/12/2025

Wales international duo Ben Carter and Rio Dyer return to the line-up as Dragons RFC kick-off the new EPCR Challenge Cup season at USA Perpignan on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 1pm UK).

Head Coach Filo Tiatia makes a total of eight changes to the side narrowly defeated by league champions Leinster last week for the Round 1 clash at Stade Aime Giral in France.

Dyer is back on the wing with Tonga international Fine Inisi returning on the opposite flank after his autumn international involvement with his country.

Joe Westwood plays at inside centre, partnering David Richards in midfield, while Angus O’Brien switches to fly half and Cai Evans to full back.

A new-look front row sees Argentine international Rodrigo Martinez pack down with Sam Scarfe - who makes a first club start - and Luke Yendle, who both make their first appearance this season. The final change is a recall for Shane Lewis-Hughes in the back row.

The replacements feature a fit-again Harri Keddie while there are also call-ups for lock Barny Langton-Cryer and scrum half Che Hope. Hookers Brodie Coghlan and Oli Burrows are ruled out this weekend so Will Austin is again named among the replacements.

Head Coach Filo Tiatia said: “Perpignan will be tough. We are not distracted by where they currently are in the French league ladder.

“When they play at home, they are a very proud team - it will be a good challenge for us.

“It’s a new competition to get stuck into and we are really looking forward to getting to France and the fixture on Sunday afternoon.”
