Dragons RFC back row Aaron Wainwright grabbed a try as Wales staged a late, late comeback in Rome to salvage a losing bonus-point - but they still slipped to a 22-15 defeat against the Italians in terrible conditions.
It was the first time Wales had been beaten at Stadio OIimpico and the first time Italy had beaten their visitors on home soil since 2007.
Late scores from Aaron Wainwright and a penalty try brought Wales back into the contest, but the swarming Italian defence held firm when it needed to most to make it back-to-back home wins for only the second time since the tournament in 25 years after beating Scotland in Round 4 last year.
Wainwright was joined by club team-mates Elliot Dee and Rhodri Williams on the field in the second half.
