Defeat for Wales in 7th place play-off

19/07/2025

Wales U20 were left frustrated after losing the 7th place play-off to Italy 31-23 in the World Rugby U20 Championship at Stadio Mario Battaglni in Rovigo.

Wales, along with Italy,  finished the game with 13 men after both Harry Thomas and Dragons RFC back row Evan Minto were yellow carded by referee Marcus Playle as the home side claimed their best ever result in the tournament by finishing seventh.

The game was punctuated throughout with the referee’s whistle with both teams conceding 28 penalties and sharing six yellow cards – with Minto’s second yellow card upgraded to a red.

Aidan Boshoff’s converted try in the last minute proved little comfort for Wales as Italian players jumped for joy at the final whistle.
