Dragons RFC are pleased to announce Wales international Brodie Coghlan has signed a new deal to remain at Rodney Parade.
An abrasive hooker who is physical on both sides of the ball, Coghlan made his 50th club appearance last weekend against the Fidelity SecureDrive Lions - having made his debut for the Men of Gwent against the same opposition in the 2022/23 season.
The 25-year-old made his international debut last Autumn against the All Blacks and has so far won two caps for his country.
He said: “I grew up in Newport as a fan of the Dragons and dreamt of playing for them one day. To continue to make my childhood dream come true and play for my home club is very special to me.
“This club means everything to me. I love everyone who is a part of the Dragons and to train and play with my closest friends is a very special feeling and a part of what drives me to always give my everything.
“This year has been an incredibly proud one. I was given the opportunity to represent my country and the support I’ve had from all the coaches and lads really made it feel even more special.
“In the same season I got my 50th cap for the club. This was one of the proudest and happiest moments in my life. I’m now looking forward to the next step in my career, pushing myself to keep getting better and learning in any way I can.
“I’ve seen how much we have grown and developed, you can see the direction we are going in as a team, and I have no doubt that we are going to keep growing and getting better as a group.”
A former backrower, Coghlan converted to hooker at 16, under the guidance of former Dragon Rob Sidoli at Newport High School and the NHSOB product has gone from strength to strength.
Coghlan scored a brace of tries against Zebre Parma last term and has scored four tries this season, including in the European win against Newcastle Red Bulls.
Forwards Coach Sam Hobbs added: “We’re really pleased to have retained Brodie.
“Having come through our pathway and academy, he has really pushed on and developed in the last few seasons establishing himself as a senior hooker, progressing quickly to 50 appearances.
“A hugely popular member of the squad - Brodie has always displayed a tough confrontational edge and physical style of play, while also significantly improving his accuracy around set-piece.
“Having had a taste of international rugby in the Autumn we know how motivated Brodie is to gain further experiences and success at Dragons RFC and we look forward to his continued development among an exciting and competitive group of hookers here.”
