As November approaches, it’s time for men across Wales to start growing Gravs once again…..
Following the success of last year’s campaign, the Welsh Rugby Players Association (WRPA) Benevolent trust has again teamed up with the Ray Gravell and Friends Trust for Grow a Grav 2011.
The Grow a Grav campaign invites men from across Wales and the World to grow a beard throughout the month of November in tribute to the late Ray Gravell.
All money raised from the campaign will go to the WRPA Benevolent Trust and the Ray Gravell and Friends Trust.
Ray Gravell, who sadly passed away in 2007 at the age of 56, was one of Wales’ greatest ambassadors and a true Welsh legend. A former Llanelli, Wales and British Lions rugby player, Grav played during one of the most successful periods in Welsh rugby history, when he became known for his trademark beard and his powerful charges from midfield. His fame continued to grow after retiring from the game when he embarked on an acting and broadcasting career – making him one of the best known faces and voices in Wales. In tribute to his immense achievements both on and off the pitch, the Ray Gravell and Friends Trust was set up to ensure that his passion, energy and spirit continues through the work that it does, supporting charities that were close to his heart.
The WRPA Benevolent trust was set up in March 2010 by the members of the WRPA to provide support to current and former professional rugby players in times of serious illness, injury or hardship.
Last year, the campaign gained huge support from players and supporters from across the Welsh regions, culminating in a ‘Grav Off’ held at Parc y Scarlets. A number of Welsh celebrities also leant their support to the campaign, including Only Men Aloud and TV Presenter Matt Johnson. In total, the campaign raised just over £13,000.
This year, Grow a Grav is looking to raise even more so it’s time to show your support once again and impress the world with your Grav!
The rules of Grow a Grav are very simple! Men should shave their beards on the morning of the 1st November. You will then have 30 days to Grow a Grav. After 12pm on the 30th you can shave your beard or attend our Grav off and join in the fun. There will also be a number of rugby related prizes for the best looking Gravs.
To take part in Grow a Grav 2011, the WRPA are inviting all members and the general public to donate £5 to the campaign. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to donate via our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/growagrav2011. We also have sponsorship forms available and will accept cash/cheque donations sent to:
Grow a Grav, c/o The Welsh Rugby Players Association, 3 Assembly Square, Britannia Quay, Cardiff Bay, CF10 4PL.
Any cheques should be made payable to ‘WRPA Benevolent Trust.’ The WRPA Benevolent Trust and Ray Gravell and Friends Trusts are registered charities number 1138659 and 1125149 respectively.
