The Dragons Under 18's recorded their first ever win away at the Scarlets last night. In what was a real tight game the Dragons showed real character to gain a well deserved victory.
The game started with a couple of penalties being exchanged between Steffan Hughes and the Dragons Niall Martin, but it was the Dragons who were playing all the rugby against the wind and the slope, and were lucky not to score more points against a very resilient Scarlets defence. A minute from half time a charged down kick lead to a Scarlet try and a half time lead of 8 - 3.
After the break the Scarlets extended their lead with a further penalty, the game then became a real battle of defences although the Scarlets offending at the breakdown on several occasions lead to Martin reducing the lead to 11 - 9. With the game entering into the last minutes a steal at the break by outstanding flanker Scott Matthews lead to quick hands and Jack Dixon running down the touch line to score in the corner, an excellent touchline conversion by Martin followed and the Dragons held out to record the regions first ever win for a age grade team at the Scarlets.
Darren Edwards The Dragons Senior head coach stated " This was a good result for us as a region we are trying our best to develop Welsh players through our Academy System and it was great to see seven of our Senior Academy boys involved to record this victory last night. "
