DRAGONS END OF SEASON AWARDS

Dragons Nic Cudd picked up the Worthington’s Supporters player of the year award at the region’s end of season dinner on Friday night.

Dragons Nic Cudd picked up the Worthington’s Supporters player of the year award at the region’s end of season dinner on Friday night. His work at the breakdown and the sheer number of turnovers he won for the Dragons made him a sure favourite with the crowd as well as the coaches, picking up 22 appearances in his first season at Rodney Parade.

Player’s Player, sponsored by Lyndon Bigmore went to centre Pat Leach who came back from a serious facial injury last season to play a large role in the regional side this season. His consistency on-field and his attitude and commitment off the field earned him the respect of his fellow players and saw him scoop the team-voted award.

Young player of the year, sponsored by A2Z Computing went to scrum half Jon Evans, who has impressed this season in the half backs. His award, voted again by his teammates, came after a season of consistent and mature performances, cementing himself in the Dragons starting line-up.

Clubman of the Year – the award for the member of the region who is deemed by their colleagues to have made an outstanding contribution to the Dragons went by an overwhelming majority to Steve Jones. The veteran hooker has been forced to retire due to a hip injury after 10 years at the region and is the last remaining original Dragon at Rodney Parade.

Speaking of Steve, Dragons Director Jim McCreedy, who was Team Manager for 6 of Steve’s 10 years in the Dragons’ shirt said “In his time at Rodney Parade, Steve has always been the consummate professional. He has shown a fantastic work ethic, pride in the shirt and has set a strong example to our younger players.
“We can only hope that the next generation of professional rugby players will have Steve’s attitude and determination.”
