Davies excited by what future holds

18/02/2021

Playmaker Sam Davies insists he has “unfinished business” at Rodney Parade after signing a new deal at the Dragons.

The region confirmed on Wednesday that the inspirational fly half had put pen to paper on new terms.

The 27-year-old has been an instrumental figure since arriving in 2019 – scoring 217 points in 27 appearances.

And Davies has now spoken about how happy he is at the region and his hopes for the future.

“I was always happy at the Dragons and last season, I wouldn't quite say it revitalised my career but we made some real statements and turned some heads,” said Davies.

“I never wanted to leave the Dragons. Thankfully we were able to get a deal sorted and I am extremely happy because there is a lot of unfinished business here.

"In times of uncertainty it's good to have security. I'm over the moon at getting the deal done and I'm really looking to what the future holds at the Dragons.

"It's a weight off my shoulders and these are really exciting times. When things do get back to normal next season we can start building towards some proper goals.”

Davies admits adding to honours with Wales was one of the key factors in his decision to stay at Rodney Parade.

He won the last of his eight caps against Samoa in the summer of 2017, also played in the uncapped fixture with the Barbarians in 2019 and was called up for the Six Nations last year.

However, for now his focus is very much on life at Dragons and helping the team improve and get back to winning ways.

Davies said: “We know we are going through a tough spell at the moment – there are many factors that are contributing to that. We are not making excuses.

“We want a reaction on Friday night against Leinster. We’ve got a big run of games coming up and Dean (Ryan) wants us to be competitive in all these games. We all feel that is achievable.

“We have to get better week to week and get our season back up and running. We don’t know what the future holds after this run of games, but we will be ready.

“Hopefully the fans will be back soon,” he added. They played a huge part in our success last season, but we can’t control that return.

“We’ve got to keep working hard and Dean will make sure that happens. We are looking forward to Friday night and getting back out there.”
