Picton-Powell treble stuns Ospreys

19/02/2023

Savannah Picton-Powell scored a second half hat-trick as Dragons Women Under-18s stormed to a 44-14 win over Ospreys in the final round of the Regional Age Grade Championship.

After impressing in the recent win over Scarlets, the team again turned on the style to run in eight tries at Ystrad Mynach with a great show of attacking rugby.

Centre and co-captain Picton-Powell led the way with a treble while Isla McMullen (2), Molly Wakely, Molly-Mae Powell and Tia Jones also scored.

The home side were quickly into their stride as great carries from Chloe Thomas-Bradley and Wakely saw them open space before the latter fed centre McMullen to score after ten minutes.

Ospreys hit back with a converted score on the quarter hour, following a tap and go, before Dragons hit back with two tries in three devastating minutes.

First wing Powell finished well in the corner, despite an attempted high tackle from the Ospreys wing was sent to the sin bin.

Then hooker Wakely powered through three tackles and ran 50 metres to score a superb solo effort. Kacey Morkot added the extras for a 17-7 led at the break.

Dragons were fast out of the traps in the second period as a great carry and offload from Evie Hill fed Picton-Powell for his first of the afternoon.

A great angle and run from back row Jones made it 27-7 before Ospreys hit back with an intercept try.

The home side, though, were not to be denied with a great initial break from Picton-Powell releasing McMullen to score her second of the day.

Picton-Powell completed her personal treble as she handed off several Ospreys for a second on the hour before grabbing her final effort two minutes from time with another individual effort.
